BMW 1150 GSA x Kawasaki KLR650 Adventure
People think I’ve lost my mind because I bought myself a couple of obscure motorcycles: a current model Kawasaki KLR 650 Adventure, and, a 2003 BMW GS 1150 Adventure. I’ve treated my brand new Donkey to some cool upgrades, but as for my old Rhino, I’m still chasing a fuel or ignition Gremlin that is limiting her true engine performance. Since getting her home, I’ve started troubleshooting by replacing the fuel pump, as well as the fuel injectors.

Hey Adam,
I think you should check and replace the starting coils, i know the issue that you’re having from the gs 1200, exactly the same problem was solved with replacing the coils
Have youreplaced the stick coils. Common fault. Symptoms sound the same. Cheers.
Was going to suggest what the above guys have said. Coils can behave fine at low load and give your bikes symptoms when placed under increased engine speeds.
Good luck with fault finding.
Fully agree with the above comments.
Coils can behave fine at low engine speeds and start to fail under increased loads.
I have also seen very similar symptoms when the plug cover gets a carbon track on the inside usually as a result of getting wet at some point. The track results in misfire at increased engine load.
Sadly I have sold my 1150 after 10 years of happy riding. The best repair I ever did was replace the stick coils. That, and a good service by somebody that knows how to tune the valve clearances, awoke the inner beast of my 1150 GSA again! I was riding with a smile on my face for many weeks after the repair. Expensive, but was worth every single Rand.
